What kind of ray are the Mobula Munkiana ?

Munk's Pygmy Devil Rays (Mobula munkiana) are one of 10 species of mobula rays in the world.

Munk’s Devil Rays also known as Mobula munkiana is closely related to the Giant Manta Ray. These rays belong to the same family - the Mobulidae.

The Mobula Munkiana can be found on the eastern pacific ocean coast and the sea of cortez, this species can be found in large aggregations up to thousands of individuals and is famous for its breathtaking acrobatic skills, these rays are known to constantly come out of the water individually or in groups.

Mobula Ray species description

These pelagic species are known for their narrow heads and horizontally flattened bodies. They typically have black or purplish-grey upper surfaces and white undersides. The outer half of their pectorals are bluish-grey and they have strongly pointed wings with dark tips. With an average width of just over a meter from wing tip to wing tip, the Mobula munkiana found off the coast of Baja California Sur is considered the smallest of all devil ray species.

Even though it is pretty easy to observe these gigantic schools of rays during the season, we still don’t know much about their lives. The mystery is what makes these ocean dwellers more captivating.

Why Mobula ray jump out of the water ?

Munk’s Devil Rays are famous for their breathtaking acrobatic skills. With superb aerodynamics, these flying rays leap out of the water, either as an individual or in groups. Witnessing them make somersaults and vertical jumps with incredible precision is a feast for the eyes. These acrobatic moves continue to remain a secret to the scientific community. Some say that they like to show off during the mating season while others think it’s a form of communication. Another theory suggests that they leap to get rid of parasites.
